The current state

I've been a Canadian, well, since I was born. I am extremely proud of this country and its heritage. I wear its flag as a tattoo on my shoulder. I went into the Armed Forces to give what little free time I had to learning how to defend the country. With all that said, the only reason I would fight for where I live now is because of the people that gave their lives before, and in the hopes that one day someone would step up to the plate and lead the country the way it was meant to be lead. Other than that, you would have to pay me a heck of a lot of money to raise arms for the country as it is now.

I live in a corrupt Canada. Every politician I have ever met or heard is out for their own gain. (That's a lie; Mayor Hazel puts everyone else before herself, and she is the only politician I have ever had respect for.) Last November, when I headed to Streetsville for the Remembrance ceremonies, Carolyn Parrish happened to make an appearance. Not two minutes into her rambling she mentioned her highly publicized criticisms of the United States, which was obviously a lame attempt to gain sympathy. Some there clapped, others cheered, but if you looked on most of the veterans faces there, you could tell the comments were in ill taste and were not well received. Had she had any respect for not only the people there, let alone the occasion, she would have never made the remarks she did. It only goes to show you how out of touch these people representing us are.

With the current sponsorship scandal, every politician worth one vote needs to get their word in. The most sickening of all, in my mind, is the Conservative leader, Mr. Stephen Harper. He is by far the kind of person that would make me leave this country if he were elected. How this fear-monger was elected as the leader of his party is beyond me. “If anybody in the rest of the country sends a signal that they are prepared to tolerate corruption, they are, quite frankly, imperilling the future of the country. Because the reaction to that in Quebec, and quite frankly not just in Quebec, in Alberta and other places, is going to be outrage that I think will lead to lasting damage to this country”.

Get off your high horse son. Stephen Harper has been on the attack since he was made party leader. All he does, as far as I can tell, is attack the opposition’s stand on every single issue that Canadians are concerned about. If the Liberal party decided they were against shooting bull frogs after 4:00am on Sundays that would become part of his platform. He’s an American in sheep’s clothing, playing the political game that has plagued the US for decades.

I’m waiting for someone the likes of Tommy Douglas to come along. Guess I should start packing the bags because no one in politics is looking out for me.

You, sir, have missed your calling!  I'm tempted to tell you that you should be a writer - you are so very well spoken - but instead, I think you ought to consider politics yourself!  It is this kind of compassion and caring, not just for a "country", but rather for the individual people of a country, that make a "Tommy Douglas".  I suspect however, that the corruption and deceit in our current political system would soon erode your resolve, as I think our system is too far gone for any moral, decent person to deal with.  Just my 2 cents.

Peter

It's nice to know i'm not the only one, and I agree, we need another Tommy Douglas, or perhaps a slightly more successful Mel Hurtig...
